Our Story:
What can be some of the best “medicine” for someone who faces a serious diagnosis such as cancer? Sometimes it comes from the heart and soul of ordinary individuals: love, support, and encouragement!
In 2014, Heather Bucalos, a native to Upstate NY’s Southern Tier, was diagnosed with a blood cancer called Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. At 30 years old, six months of chemo treatments were the hardest things she said she ever faced. The community support she received was amazing. Besides donations and financial support to offset the challenges, the best thing she said was given that year was MORAL SUPPORT! Sometimes she wanted to give up but her community reminded her they were behind her 100%!
In 2015 a fundraiser was hosted for her by a family friend. That day, a man with brain cancer, and his wife, came to show their support, Ken and Jen Long,...people she’d never met. Heather found out that Ken needed a lot more help than she felt she needed and wanted to help him too. And that’s where Bainbridge Glow Run began!
She recovered from the effects of chemo by walking and doing light running. It helped bring a sense of control back into her life. She mixed her hobby with her hope to give back to Ken. She asked the same community who gave her moral support to share their positive energy with Ken. She knew they would. That’s just the kind of great people they are. The Southern Tier is a place like no other.
September 2015 was the first Glow Run for Ken Long. Over 100 people participated in one way other another either by running, volunteering, or donating to our benefit.
September 2016 Glow Run was hosted for Mindy Ives Natoli, from Oxford, NY, who battled Leukemia.
September 2018 Glow Run was held for Bob Jinks of Bainbridge, NY, who battled a rare form of cancer.
The September 2019 Glow Run/Walk will be held for Heather who has suffered a relapse of the same cancer that inspired her to start this event four years ago. It will be hosted by Tiffiney Harp, Cassandra Blass, Melissa Matthews, and Sarah Gifford, with help from MANY additional friends and family.
The Bainbridge Glow Run represents an opportunity for giving back, having fun, and working together for a great cause.
It serves as a way to share what money cannot buy, the love and light that is in each of us!
A special Thank You to everyone who has donated time, energy, love, and dollars to the Bainbridge Glow Run/Walk. You are the light.
